George van der Mijn, born in London, was the son of Herman van der Mijn, a Dutch portraitist who worked in England with his older son Frans. After his father's death George travelled to Holland where he settled and appears as an independent artist in Amsterdam around 1750. His early death in 1763 accounts for the small size of his oeuvre.
