Lucas van Valckenborch (before 1535 – 1597)
With its many canals and broad expanses of water ice skating was a popular sport in the Netherlands. The wooden ice skate with a blade on the sole was invented in the Netherlands as early as the 13th century. By the 16th century ice skaters had become a popular feature of Netherlandish winter landscapes. In our picture, a wide array of folk are enjoying this winter pastime. Situated on the other bank of the river is the city of Antwerp, which is clearly visible to the last detail in spite of the great distance. We are able to discern the fortified city walls, the church spires which are considerably taller than the roofs of the houses, and the typical windmills. Valckenborch’s characteristic narrative style of painting with its many different scenes engages the observer.
