Lievens, Jan (1607–1674),Dutch painter and graphic artist. A fellow pupil of Rembrandt under Pieter Lastman, he worked with Rembrandt in Leiden 1625–31, their early paintings sometimes being confused. He painted portraits and religious scenes, such as The Raising of Lazarus 1631 (Brighton Art Gallery and Museum, England). His etchings are often more highly esteemed than his paintings.
Lievens visited England and stayed for some time in Antwerp, where he was influenced by Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. On his return to Holland he carried out a number of officially commissioned decorative works; for example, in the town hall, Amsterdam.
