Joseph Heintz (1564 - 1609) studied under his father and a local painter before moving to Italy and joining a circle of German and Netherlandish artists in Rome. There, he studied ancient and Renaissance art. In 1587, he traveled to Florence and Venice where he admired the work of Tintoretto, Titian, and Paolo Veronese. Heintz was named portraitist and court painter to Emperor Rudolf II in 1591 and was made a noble in 1602. Afterwards, he divided his time between Italy and Prague
