Spencer Stanhope (1829-1908), the Pre-Raphaelite painter, left Christ Church, Oxford, in 1851 and became a captain in the West Yorkshire militia. He took up painting as a pupil of G. F. Watts and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1859. After 1880, he lived in Florence, and there are frescoes by him in the Anglican church there, as well as in Marlborough College chapel and the Oxford Union. After his death, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Carfax Gallery. The catalogue was written by his friend William de Morgan, whose novel An Affair of Dishonour (1910) was dedicated to Stanhope.
