John Greenwood was born in Boston in 1760. He was the second son of Isaac and Mary Greenwood. He attended the North Writing School until he was thirteen years old. At that time he was sent to Portland, Maine to live with his uncle and learn cabinet making.
He stayed with his uncle for two years. In 1775, John became concerned about his family. There was much unrest in the colonies at that time. The British troops were in Boston. John feared that the British would kill his parents. He decided to walk home to Boston, a distance of 150 miles.
John Greenwood served in the rebel army from 1775 until 1776. During the years 1777 and 1778, Greenwood worked as a fisherman. He re-enlisted in the army in 1778 and served until 1779. He then joined the navy and served until 1783,
After the Revolution, John Greenwood could not find work in Boston, so he set out for New York. In 1785, he opened his dental practice. He earned an excellent reputation as a dentist and eventually became the favorite dentist of George Washington.
