Theodore Gericault (1791 - 1824) Born in Rouen as Jean Louis Andre Theodore Gicault, he studied under Carle Vernet and Pierre Guin, but had a deep admiration for Rubens. In 1812, Gicault exhibited his Wounded Cuirassier, a portrait of a cavalry officer. He studied for three years in Italy beginning in 1816, and then returned to Paris to paint his most famous large-scale pieces. Gicault died after falling from a horse in 1824.
