Painter and architect, Giotto was born to Vespignano nel Mugello around 1267. In the years between 1285 and 1295 he was present in Assisi, where, he participated in the decorating of the Upper Basilica of some episodes of the Old Testament and the Histories of Christ. Always in the Upper Basilica, in 1296 Giotto it produced the Cycle of St. Francis.
After a stay to Rome in 1300, his presence is documented in Florence and Rimini, where he worked in the Temple Malatestiano.
In the years 1303-1310, Giotto appeared in Padua where he decorated the Chapel of the Scrovegnis. The last big pictorial enterprise of Giotto, is the frescos for the decoration of four chapels in Santa Croce in Florence. Today the only frescos remaining from this cycle are in the Capella Bardi, with histories of St. Francis (1325 around), and those of the Capella Peruzzi, with histories of St. John the Baptist (1315-20).
The search of naturalness in the expression of the characters, is the principal element characterizing Giotto's work. This principle is accented in some work on table as the Christ Crocifisso (1296-1300) for the church of Saint Maria Novella in Florence and the Lady in Majesty (1305-1310) for the church of Ognissanti, also in Florence.
In 1334, he will be commissioned as magister et gubernator of the work of the Cathedral in Florence (for which Giotto planned the bell tower), together with that of architect of the boundaries and the fortifications of the city. The interest for architecture matured in Giotto from his search on presenting space since the beginning of his work. Giotto died in Florence in 1337.
