Franz Von Lenbach (1836 - 1904) was a German painter who spent most of his career in Munich. However, he also spent short periods of time working in Italy and Vienna. Although he painted a variety of subjects, he is remembered as a portraitist. His Venetian tradition of painting appealed to the aristocracy and rulers of Germany. He made the acquaintance of Bismarck in 1878 and formed a lasting friendship. Lenbach painted close to one hundred paintings of him over his career. After his death, Lenbach self-designed house in Munich was turned into a museum.
