Lionel Lemoine FitzGerald was born in 1890 in Winnipeg. He attended the Keszthelyi School of Art in Winnipeg, Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, and the Art Students' League in New York. In his later years, he became a member of the "Group of Seven" and in 1933 he joined a newly founded "Canadian Group of Painters". During the years of 1929 to 1947, FitzGerald was the principal of the Winnipeg Art School. FitzGerald lived on his family's property on Lot 59, on the east side of Henderson Highway. Here, he spent many summers painting pictures of the beautiful scenery. It was said that one of his first paintings was a farm in the area of Bird's Hill. Lionel FitzGerald died in 1956.
