Soren Emil Carlsen (1853-1932) spent much of his life teaching art at schools in Chicago, San Francisco, New York and Philadelphia. A close friend of the painter J. Alden Weir, Carlsen visited Weir frequently at his home in Windham in the early years of the 20th century before buying a home in Falls Village in 1905, where he spent summers until 1932.Carlsen painted Impressionist landscapes with a soft, generalized light and a cool range of color. Carlsen brought a sense of geometric shapes to his landscape compositions and a dry surface that were distinctly his own. His cool serene woodland interiors suggest soft, filtered light and careful draughtsmanship.Carlsen was greatly influenced by the still life paintings of the 18th century French artist, Jean Chardin. Carlsen’s distinctive still life paintings follow Chardin’s example, focusing on humble household objects set in dim austere interior and painted in a soft, muted mood. Carlsen was a master in bringing a magnetic aura to these low-key paintings with brilliant reflective highlights
