Edmund Blair Leighton born in London, Edmund Blair Leighton (no relation to Frederic Lord Leighton) studied at the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited at the Royal Academy as early as 1878. The artist was a relatively minor figure in late Victorian painting, primarily painting romantic mediaeval scenes and depictions of modern couples in domestic settings for a select group of patrons. In particular, God Speed, an example of Leighton's mediaeval pictures, reflects the Victorian taste for nostalgic representations of a simpler, nobler pre-industrialized England.
