Alexander Alexeyev spent much time and efforts to restore the old enamelling process and to develop new paints that were in no way inferior to the old ones, drawing on old studies in glass-making and enamelling and on the recollections of local veterans.
Many talented painters capable of carrying on the local tradition joined the business in the late 1960s. They analysed new possibilities for the development of Rostov enamels. Joining forces with jewellers Valentina Soldatova and Lydia Matakova, enamellers representing different generations produced original pieces of diverse shapes and purposes, decorated with enamel plaques with floral designs, genre paintings, landscapes or miniature portraits. Open-work or cloisonne were most frequently employed in the decoration of these pieces. In Soldatova's works the open-work frame conformed to the integral rhythm of pictorial compositions, turning them into accomplished works of art. Matakova often preferred intricate filigree designs, seeking to convey the painter's idea both in the frame and the piece itself. The factory's leading jeweller today, Matakova is working hard to expand the range of local wares. Her frames and finished pieces have original shapes and filigree designs, perfectly harmonised with the local style of enamelling and the miniatures produced by different enamellers.
